Sunlight At Premium In Downtown Chicago

With a number of skyscrapers coming up close together, downtown Chicago is facing a serious shortage of natural sunlight. Others say, it's just not downtown alone that is facing this problem. The problem is everywhere. The craze for condos in high-rises and residents wish to stay in a small densely populated area with all the amenities and conveniences located close by is the reason behind this problem.

Developers are only too happy to oblige these homebuyers with megabucks who wish to live in high-rise condos and penthouses. The shopping, dining, transport and other amenities are so convenient that everybody wants a piece of downtown. Result high rises packed together like sardines.

City planners say they lay down several rules for protecting sun light in public places. One regulation is for thinner, taller buildings, second is the requirement for plazas and open spaces around the buildings. City officials also say that not all residents protests are genuine as most residents protest seem to be more about the blocking of their view by these newer high rises.

It is ironic that these same residents were willing to pay a premium price to buy a home in these high rises but when others wish to own a piece of similar property in other high rises close by they protest vociferously saying natural light is being blocked.

Whatever the residents motivations it is a fact that many areas of Chicago are getting darker in the day time because of close proximity of the high rises and way has to be found to protect citizens right to natural right.
