Condominium Tower Replaces North Tower.
The North Tower of the Intercontinental Chicago hotel would be replaced with the 71-storey hotel/condominium skyscraper. The new proposal would not affect the architectural feature of the Art Deco South Tower. In 1961 the 26-story north tower was built as a separate hotel.
The construction would begin in mid 2007 depending on the sales of the high priced condo units. The proposed skyscrapers will add elegance along the Michigan Avenue replacing north tower, famous for its blank concrete exterior and not so pleasing building. Preservationists are concerned about the building boom that is giving a cramped look to the Michigan Avenue.
In order to maximize the value of the property some developers redevelop even the well performing-assets. The new tower will have 310 condos, 150 hotel suites and 11,000 square feet of retail space. $15 million will be used for the renovation, which will convert it into luxury hotel. The proposed tower will be twice the height of the south tower.
