Chicago Condos Serve Retiring Baby Boomers
Chicago condos and other real estate developments are catering to retiring baby boomers. While many from this generation would like to move to sunnier climates, many will opt for Chicago condos to stay close to family but avoid the stigma a traditional retirement communities.
A number of age-restricted developments are springing up to cater to this generation, but they are located within larger communities that include Chicago townhouses and single family homes that help retirees feel like a part of their community. This reflects changing attitudes among retired home-buyers, reflected in the following excerpt from a Detroit Free Press article:
Despite the popularity of age-restricted retirement developments, one expert believes many boomers are not sold on the concept.
"Preliminary evidence from focus groups with boomers suggests that they have a problem with conventional, large-scale retirement communities," said Victor Regnier, professor of architecture and gerontology at the University of Southern California.
"There's the sense that this is my father's retirement community," Regnier said. "It's not hip enough for me.
