Turning Apartments into Condos Displaces Long-Time Residents
In response to soaring prices for Chicago real estate, the owners of
Ontario Place, an apartment complex in the River
North neighborhood of Chicago that is home to many low-income seniors
and immigrants, is planning to go condo. Residents, however, are not going
to go without a fight. Some are even protesting on the street.
When the building was first put up, it dedicated 83 units to Section 8, or
government subsidized housing. The contract with the government expired
two years ago, and the new owners have no legal obligation to long-time
residents.
